UNDERGROUND VOICES: POETRY
CHRIS MAJOR

Passed

You could've picked
a different place :
few trees,
bed of flowers,
bit of grass;
the retina's last image
etched with more than
the concrete and litter
offered by this car-park.
You could've talked;
tried to off load
the pressure that
squeezed out joy
and the bitter note of
"no obits, no church."

I pass the scene,
now empty;
the shit of it
sugared by frost,
blackbirds the only
text of life
on a page
wiped clean by
an engine's hum......
